WOYWW 279

A 5" x 7" Gelli plate I got on Monday being used to flatten some gold braid : D. A mug cut I just finished fussy cutting (cutting mat just put away). A small cluster of Distress Markers and a Christmas ball which will be two domes. A very mad max Christmas (thunder domes)? lol.

I also got my Great Wheel Monday. I'm still working out the kinks of getting the wheel to spin true so the drive band doesn't fall off. And it's a MONSTER, at least when it's in my living room/lounge. The whole thing is about 6 feet long, the wheel is about 48 inches. I can't get a picture of the whole thing yet because the chairs I had to move to put it in are still in the way lol.

It was built in 1865. I love the little details at the ends of the bench. The leg on the right is a piano. from the 1960s.  The leg on the left is a chrome shelving unit. My furniture is eclectic : D.

The wheel hub. Astounding light, maybe about 5 pounds.I swear the bench and legs are made of locust wood (some heavy heavy wood).

The business end of a Great Wheel. And now you can see how Sleeping Beauty could prick her finger. That is a stack of 78's on the piano which I play on my tabletop Victrola. I'm a bit of a Luddite, and I like to have some activities that operate without electricity as well : D. Can you tell I've had a lot of experience with power outages?

Head over to Julia's Stamping Ground for more crafty desks.

What a wonderful wheel, love the look of the old woods. 78s?? Thought I was the only one that STILL had them...LOL I have heard that people are starting to collect the old vinyl records hmmmm!??

Thanks for visiting my blog this week, and the nice comment.

I am in awe--that thing is amazing!!! Even more amazing that it's from the 1800's! Now we need a nice big floor loom to go with it. LOL. You probably need a whole room dedicated to this stuff. I think that one of my favorite things about a spinning wheel and a loom is that it doesn't require electricity. It's funny because when I got my Big Shot diecutting machine, I LOVED the fact that it's hand cranked! Wish we could see you in action spinning! Have a great day! Sandy Leigh #54

Wow! What a cool post!!! I still don't have a Gelli plate even though it's been on my wish list for awhile.

I love your new antique spinning wheel! Look at that workmanship! Oh how fun to have all those 78's and to have something to play them on too!
Happy WOYWW! Angie #52

Wow! That's a beast! Have you used it yet? Is it going to stay in the living room?
It's a real antique.
Sorry I'm a day late but I just didn't have time.
Have a good week!

Amazing to find a genuine antique great wheel - most of them were broken up during the industrial revolution. I am always amused by pictures in story books of Sleeping Beauty with a modern self-winding spinning wheel, with absolutely nothing on it that she could have pricked her finger on! I've never used a great wheel but the weight of the wheel must have tremendous inertia, enabling it to keep spinning for quite a while, I should think. Hope you manage to get it set up OK.

I have a modern Ashford wheel (single drive with separate tension device) - amazing after all those years of unchanging design since the invention of the self-wind wheel, that someone came up with something new! It works extremely well. I have not used it for several years because I can't keep up the repetitive movement with my foot these days, and have been sorely tempted to buy a rakestraw spinner. One day, maybe!! I have too many other projects and ideas going at the moment to get back to spinning, unfortunately.

Looking forward to hearing more about your great wheel, and seeing some results! How exciting this is.

Happy belated WOYWW,
